Not to be outdone by his pet-crazy predecessor Byron, English Pre-Raphaelite
poet and animal fanatic Dante Gabriel Rossetti ran, at his Cheyne Walk
"Tudor House" in Chelsea, a three-ring circus of exotic beasts. Not
content with a Brahmin bull, a zebra, an armadillo, a wallaby, a Japanese salamander
and an Irish deerhound, he soon added dormice, rabbits, marmots, woodchucks,
laughing jackasses, a Pomeranian puppy, owls and parrots. Also in residence
were the novelist George Meredith and the poet
Algernon Charles Swinburne, a being every bit as exotic as any of the other
specimens in Rossetti's suburban zoo. -
